The challenge

FrieslandCampina wanted to introduce a plant-based chocolate drink on the market under the Chocomel brand and sought input and feedback from consumers.

The approach

After internal tests at FrieslandCampina, the most promising prototypes were selected, after which they were tested for taste and improvement points by our consumers during a Central Location Test (CLT). The best prototype was then tested at home during a Home-Use Test (HUT). Consumers received a liter carton of the plant-based Chocomel to take home and used it as they wished (e.g. cold or after exercise) and completed a questionnaire about this.

Ultimately, we developed a plant-based Chocomel that is very close in taste to the one and only Chocomel. The result

The product met the expectations of 97 percent of consumers and was successfully launched in various supermarkets. The plant-based Chocomel has even won the food award for best innovation in 2023.

Greater market share

The plant-based Chocomel is so close to the taste of the original Chocomel that this enabled FrieslandCampina to conquer a significant market share within the plant-based segment with the Chocomel brand.

Food award winner

The plant-based Chocomel has been awarded the food award for best innovation of 2023, a great recognition for this innovative product.
